Gurus Speaks

The Twenty-Four Gurus of DattatreyaYayati was a rajarishi, an ancestor of the Yadu clan to which Sri Krishna belonged. His queen was Devayani, the daughter of Rishi Shukracharya. The only weakness the king had was desire, and desire was his undoing. Cursed by the rishi on one occasion, to become old before his time unless he could exchange his old-age with someone else, Yayati sought his eldest son Yadu and begged him to help him out of the predicament.Yadu, of all the king's sons, was interested in spiritual life. He pondered over the situation. Seeing his father obsessed with youth and desire, Yadu realised the impermanence of both. He was filled with vairagya. However, he did not want to grow old before his time, because he thought, 'When old-age comes gradually one exhausts his desires naturally and along with them the karma. Besides, youth is a time for spiritual, sadhana, a preparation period for the development of higher consciousness....

Gurus Positive Inspiration For Disciples we should remember that the guru is only a catalyst. The light is within us, it does not come from outside. One has to be a light unto oneself. The guru is inside, the light is inside, the consciousness is inside, and eventually we have to turn our vision inwards to experience it. We cannot remain fixed or attached to a person because it eventually leads to many problems. It also colours the true aspiration which originally brought the teacher and disciple together. To have a guide is well and good, but to hook or latch onto that guide is wrong. If it does happen then you are no longer able to understand why you came to spiritual life. You are not able to maintain your inner sincerity and begin to dupe yourself....

Why there should be Obedience to Guru? Obedience is a precious virtue, because if you try to develop obedience, the ego which is the arch enemy on the path to self-realisation, is rooted out. Only the disciple who obeys his guru can have command over his lower self. Obedience should he very practical, whole hearted and actively persevering. True obedience to guru neither procrastinates nor questions. A hypocritical disciple obeys his guru from fear. The true disciple obeys his guru with pure love, for love's sake....

What is the function of the guru element or guru tattwa?People say that the guru is the remover of avidya, the darkness, the
nescience
. Where does this avidya lie? What does it mean? The darkness, the nescience, the avidya, is the covering over the light, which has to be removed. The centre of this light is the heart, not the mind. From unconditional light it has become conditioned light, from unconditional love it has become conditioned love, from unconditional feeling it has become conditioned feeling. There are many such coverings over the heart and the guru aims to remove them.
You have to deal with the mind yourself. The process of dealing with the mind has been defined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: management of the mental modifications is yoga – this is the second sutra. After you have managed your mind you will establish yourself in your own nature – this is the third sutra. Here, personal effort is emphasized in order to deal with and manage the mind. But when you want to remove the conditionings from life and express the unconditional nature, then the guru comes in...

What is Guru kripa? What are the prerequisites to obtain it? What changes happen then and why doesn't the grace of guru last longer? The grace of guru will only last for the time you open yourself to receive the grace. The moment you close yourself, it stops. You can fill a bottle with urine, cork it and place it in the middle of the Ganges river for a thousand years, in the belief that the Ganges will purify the urine in the bottle, but when you remove the bottle and uncork it, the water inside will still taste like one thousand year old amaroli. However, if you fill a bottle with urine, leave it uncorked and put it in the river, in one day it will be washed clean and there won't be any trace of amaroli....
